Growth area
Suriname and tropical South and Central America.
Tree description
Height 35-45m with up to 3.5m high roots. The straight cylindrical branch-free (5-)12-15(-20)m long and has a diameter of (0.4-)0.7 (-1)m.
Wood description
The pale brown heartwood quickly discolours to a beautiful purple-blue when exposed to light. To preserve this color as best as possible, the wood must be properly sealed from the air with wax or certain types of varnish. If the wood is not finished, exposure to ultraviolet light (UV) will turn the purple color to dirty brown. Gum can ooze out of the gum tunnels, especially at higher temperatures.
